Botox and Fillers FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (Botox®)

Who will evaluate and counsel me during my visit?

Dr. Wyse and Dr. Pearlman evaluate each of their patients to discuss specific areas of concern to that individual.  Generally, photographs of the patient’s face are taken so that the doctor and patient can review the specific goals of the patient looking at the photographs together.

Who administers Botox® injections in the practice?
Dr. Wyse and Dr. Pearlman personally perform all of the Botox® and filler injections.

Is Botox® administration painful?
No, there is a slight sting with injection, but we offer all patients numbing cream which we apply for several minutes prior to treatment.  This makes the treatment virtually painless for most patients.

Are there restrictions after Botox® treatment?  Downtime?
We ask that you not press or rub the treated area on the day of treatment (though you can wash your face or apply makeup gently).  We ask that you do not work out or lie down for 4 hours after treatment.  Otherwise there are no restrictions and there is no downtime.

How quickly does Botox® work?
Effects are seen at 2 to 3 days after treatment.

How long do the effects of Botox® last?
Effects last 3 to 4 months.  For patients who have been getting injections regularly, generally, the time between treatments can be extended to 4 to 6 months.

What are the side effects of Botox®?
Since the effects wear off after 3 to 4 months, any side effect wears off by then as well.  The main concern is Botox® that is injected to close to the muscles that control the lids.  This can result in a droopy lid or reduced ability to close the lids.  As ophthalmologists trained in the administration of Botox®, our doctors are particularly attentive to this area of concern.

What areas can be treated with Botox®?
Forehead lines
Brows- Botox® can help lift the brows, especially in combination with filler
Glabella- the lines between the eyebrows
Crow’s feet- the wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes
Bunny lines- the wrinkles at the sides of the upper nose
Chin- to smooth chin crease and dimpling/irregularity of the chin, and to elongate the face
Below the outer mouth corners – to help lift a downturned mouth (usually in combination with filler)
Lips- tiny amounts of Botox® help smooth vertical lip lines just above and below lips

Is there anyone who should not have Botox® injections?
There are a few rare neurologic diseases that would prevent the use of Botox®.  Consultation with Dr. Wyse or Dr. Pearlman can determine if you are a candidate for Botox®.

How much does Botox® treatment cost?
The cost of treatment depends on the amount of Botox® that is used (the number of Botox® units).  This depends upon what areas of the face are treated, the anatomy of the individual, and the effect desired by the patient.  During a consultation, Dr. Wyse or Dr. Pearlman will help the patient decide on a treatment plan and discuss the number of Botox® units needed.

Frequently Asked Questions (Dermal Fillers)

Who will evaluate and counsel me during my visit?
Dr. Wyse and Dr. Pearlman evaluate each of their patients to discuss specific areas of concern to that individual.  Generally, photographs of the patient’s face are taken so that the doctor and patient can review the specific goals of the patient looking at the photographs together.

Who administers dermal filler injections in the practice?
Dr. Wyse and Dr. Pearlman personally perform all filler injections.

Is facial filler administration painful?
No, there is a slight sting or pressure sensation with injection, but we offer all patients numbing cream which we apply for several minutes prior to treatment.  This makes the treatment very comfortable for most patients.

Are there restrictions after facial filler treatment?  Downtime?
We ask that you not press or rub the treated area on the day of treatment and wait until the day after treatment to apply makeup.  Otherwise, there are no restrictions.  Some patients do get bruising or swelling in the treated areas, but this can be covered with make-up starting the day after treatment.

How quickly does facial filler work?
Effects are seen immediately after treatment. There can, however, be some swelling or bruising after the treatment depending upon the patient, so the final result is seen once these resolve.

What is facial filler made of and how does it work?
Our practice uses fillers made of only hyaluronic acid and local anesthetic (lidocaine).  Hyaluronic acid is a colorless, natural substance that is normally made in our bodies and found in our skin. In the skin, hyaluronic acid delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture and softness, and adds volume.  As we age, our skin loses volume, causing wrinkles and sagging.  By injecting filler, we are replacing hyaluronic acid.  Wrinkles are smoothed and volume is restored, recreating a more youthful contour to the curves of the face.

How long do the effects of facial filler last?
Effects last about 12 to 18 months depending upon the type of filler used.  Dr. Wyse or Dr. Pearlman can discuss this with you during your consultation.  As filler is absorbed by the body over time, there is some residual filler and future treatments may not require as much product.

Which fillers are used and what are the differences between them?
Our practice uses Juvederm® Ultra XC, Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC, Juvederm Voluma® XC, Juvederm Vollure™ XC, and Juvederm Volbella® XC.  These fillers vary in their viscosity (thickness and how easily they spread).  They also vary in how quickly they are absorbed by the body.  The differing consistency of these products makes some more appropriate for certain areas of the face.  In addition, the severity and depth of the wrinkles being treated may make one filler more appropriate than another.

What areas can be treated with facial fillers? Click here to see pictures
Under the eyes- hollowing (tear troughs) under the eyes can be filled, bagginess can be smoothed, dark circles can be improved.
Cheeks- volume can be added to restore natural contour and soften irregularities
Nasolabial folds, the fold extending from the outer nose corner to the outer corner of the mouth, can be softened
Around the mouth- fine lines can be filled, the corners of the mouth can be lifted
Lips- can be plumped or defined, wrinkled appearance can be improved
Marionette lines, the folds extending downward from the corners of the mouth, can be filled
Chin- volume can be added to provide a stronger profile

What are the side effects of facial fillers?
Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects  are bruising, swelling, and firmness and tenderness in the areas injected. Infection is very rare, but before treatment, your skin will be cleansed and antiseptic applied.  Dr. Wyse or Dr. Pearlman will review side effects with you before treatment.

Is there anyone who should not have facial filler injections?
Consultation with Dr. Wyse or Dr. Pearlman can determine if you are a candidate for facial fillers.  Patients who have a compromised immune system and are at increased risk of infection should not be treated.  Patients who have a history of aggressive scar formation (keloid formers) are also not good candidates.  Patients who take blood thinners are at increased risk of bruising and swelling.

How much does facial filler treatment cost?
The cost of treatment depends on the amount and type of filler used.  This depends upon what areas of the face are treated, the anatomy of the individual, and the effect desired by the patient.  During a consultation, Dr. Wyse or Dr. Pearlman will help the patient decide on a treatment plan and discuss the amount and type of filler recommended.
